Historical Note

Board of Commissioners created by Act of the General Assembly approved July 2, 1842 "to provide for the payment of the expenses incurred on account of the late insurrection." $50,000 allocated with Edward S. Wilkinson, Edward W. Lawton & Stephen Branch appointed to receive, examine & audit claims against the State & draw orders upon the General Treasurer. Over 5,000 payments approved for military services or incurred expenses August 1842 to January 1846. Whole amount expended by the commission $46,046.92 including 4,343 orders drawn for military service & 714 non – military claims (Acts & Resolves of the General Assembly, 1841 - 1842, Vol. 43, p. 135; Committee Reports, Rhode Island General Assembly, Vol. 10 # 102)
