Revolutionary War general; son of Nathanael Greene & Mary Mott; b. Potowomut, R.I.; memb. Soc. of Friends; Brig. Gen’l Cont’l Army, 1775; led left column at Battle of Trenton; in 1780 succeeded G. Washington as Commander of Continental Army; res. in Georgia & R.I.); b. August 7 [O.S. July 27] 1742, R.I., d. June 19, 1786; major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, known for his successful command in the Southern Campaign.
