The Department of Public Welfare was established 1935 as part of a major reorganization of the state's many boards and commissions into government departments in the 1930s (Public Law 1935, ch. 2218, 2250.) The new department inherited the programs and functions of the State Public Welfare Commission (successor to the Board of State Charities and Corrections). In addition, several other social programs that had recently been established in the 1920s and 1930s were also placed under the aegis of the department. It was replaced ia short four years later by the Department of Social Welfare.
