The Jamestown and Newport Ferry Company was incorporated in the May session 1873 (Private Acts of the General Assembly Vol. 30b, page 107) as a body corporate and politic for purposes of establishing and maintaining a ferry between Jamestown and Newport. Jamestown and Newport Ferry Company; chartered 1873; in ca. 1912 absorbed Narragansett Transportation Company (formed 1906); in 1958 leased to Rhode Island Public Works Dept., and operated by its Ferry Division until 1969 when bridge construction made ferry service obsolete; operated ferries between Jamestown, Newport, and North and South Kingston, R.I.; chiefly owned by town of Jamestown, R.I.
