Admiralty courts (U.S.): admiralty jurisdiction exercised by courts of vice admiralty commissioned by royal patents or by colonial governors, or by common law courts till 1776. Functions of the Court of Vice Admiralty transferred to the jurisdiction of the colony at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. June 16, 1776, James Honeyman ordered the General Assembly to give up commission as Advocate for the Court of Vice Admiralty under the crown of Great Britain. November 2, 1776, committee appointed to revise the Act establishing a Maritime Court for the trial of prize causes within this State. October 30, 1779, James Mitchell Varnum appointed Advocate of the court of Admiralty. July 20, 1780. Act establishing Court of Admiralty in this State passed by legislature (Acts & Resolves of the General Assembly, Vol. 13, p. 67; Vol. 14, p. 123; Vol. 19, p. 8; vol. 20, p. 1)
