Scope and Contents

The collection consists of four audio recordings of The Lively Experiement podcast which was one of the activities of the Rhode Island 1663 Colonial Charter Commission commemorating the 350th anniversary of Rhode Island’s Royal Charter of 1663. Also includes two (2) copies of the publication, “A Lively Experiment: Reflections on the Charter of 1663” made possible through major funding support from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, an independent state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The publications consists of an Introduction by Ted Widmer and the following essays, “The Charter of 1663, Major Milestone on the Road to Religious Liberty” by J. Stanley Lemons; “Laboratory for ‘The Lively Experiment’” by Patrick Conley; “’Jews, Turks, and Infidels’: How Rhode Island’s Lively Experiment Helped Chart the American Way” by C. Morgan Grefe; and “Rhode Island’s Gift to the World” by Ted Widmer.


Also included is a copy of the press release for the “Learning from the Charter” event held at the State House on November 22, 2013 and a copy of the Providence Journal article “RI officials urge educators to embrace colonial charter” by Randal Edgar published on November 22, 2013.
