Scope and Contents

This report is a product of a grant from the National Historical Publications & Records Commission (88-077), made in support of the Rhode Island State Archives. Grant funding was provided for a two year period to provide the foundation for a professional state archives program and a professional historical records program for the state at large. Included in the plan of work was a survey of the historical records held in the town and city clerks offices of the thirty-nine (39) municipalities of the state. The purpose of the survey was to identify and record data in order to clarify the extent and condition of the historical records of local government in Rhode Island. The survey was based on a similar endeavor conducted in part in 1984 by the Rhode Island Historical Advisory Records Board in the preparation of the state assessment report on historical records, published as The Preservation of Our Right to Information and the Documentation of Our Heritage by David C. Maslyn (Providence, RI, 1985).
